THE RIDES
The Highlander Cycling Tour consists of a choice of five rides on a Saturday in mid September. The rides are located in the scenic and hilly Finger Lakes region of upstate New York around the time of wine festivals and the beginning of fall foliage. In addition there are optional time trial events on Friday afternoon/evening; a 5 mile Mountain Prologue Individual Time Trial and a 22 mile Mountain Prologue Team Time Trial. SAG stops are frequent and well stocked. Road rides are well marked on paved roads with light vehicle traffic and the Mountain bike course has plenty of epic single track.
The 2010 Highlander Cycle Tour continues its Tour de France style of adventure as we visit new cols and towns in these majestic Finger Lakes. Three of the four road courses are new. The names have been changed and once you’ve ridden them, you’ll know why. The Highlander is like no other tour out there. Come and see why.
Additionally we now provide links to our routes on Google maps as generated by Bike Route Toaster. This map route site, in addition to a map, cue sheet, and elevation profile, enables riders with GPS units on their bikes to download the routes. You can also download a KML file and use Google Earth for a virtual tour of the ride.
NB: Because summer road construction or weather caused problems the ride courses may change. For example the DB4D and QHT had to be altered due to deterioration of Dug road. So check for revisions.
Below are 2010 ride descriptions with more details to follow later:
Death B4 Dismount Double Metric
You asked for it. Here it is. Promising to open up a can on all riders willing to tackle it, the DB4D ride brings it all. We think this may be the toughest ride on the planet with its rollercoaster, wicked steeps effect. While staying true to its beginnings and core, this year you’ll see some terrain the Highlander has never been to. You’ll climb some new monsters and visit some familiar old friends. You’ll pass multiple vineyards and lakes and wish you could stop for a long while… This year the new double metric century DB4D will ride South and East taking in Canandaigua Lake and Keuka Lake as well as multiple towns and cols in between. Early on you’ll meet the new and wicked triplet, sandwiched between Le Alpe de Bopple and Col de Gannett is a climb to the top of Stid Hill. Bienvenue to Beaucoup Bills! Magnifique indeed. You’ll also climb to new heights on Bourg d’Bully Hill, St. Skyline and Yves de Yoder. With 128 miles and 10,000 feet of climb on grades up to 23%, the DB4D promises to be the ride challenge of your life.
Too much? There is a 100 mile cut-off by turning west (left) on Italy Hill Rd, by passing the scenic Keuka loop. Or you can choose the 86 mile Quads Hilla Thrilla.

Corkscrew Century
You loved the Lowlander course last year and we’ve kept a number of elements from that ride, like the Neils Creek valley and instead of the gentle climb up Twelve Mile Creek the similar West Creek (County Road 7) climb with a rest stop at Prattsburg. But in keeping with our visit to the Keuka Lake, we’ve brought you the gentlest route possible in these parts including descents from Prattsburg to Italy Hill and down to Branchport, a view of Keuka Lake on Skyline Drive and back on some scenic roads to Middlesex and Naples. You might want to bring a wine glass and stop along the way. 100 miles, 5100 feet of climb but nothing above 10%. You can also take shorter versions of 70 or 80 miles.

Quads Hilla Thrilla
Worthy of century level effort, this 86 miler, with 6600 feet of climb has many of the same monster climbs of DB4D and they’ll be sure to chomp on you. Legends like Bopple and Gannett with the Bills Rd climb up Stid Hill in between will test you. The route follows DB4D through to Prattsburg but then descends back to Italy Valley. A late climb up Sliter and Greisa will test your will to survive.

YODELER
The fabulous “Wanderer” has a new name and one that conjures up images of laughing and rolling around on the hill tops. Well, without a doubt, this 37 miler brings you scenic beauty as you meander the Bristol Valley and Canandaigua Lake scene. The full 37 mile ride involves 1800 feet of climbing, but we also suggest shorter options of 17 or 28 miles with less climbing for the less experienced. We’ve packaged as much vista and flat terrain as possible in this short but sweet ride. With just enough challenge to create that mountain-top experience, you’re sure to come away singing. Riders will enjoy the same amenities and many of the same scenic views as the longer riders.

MOUNTAINEER
For the mountain bike enthusiasts we offer a 40K (25 mile) off-road challenge featuring 7,000 feet of climbing, including climbs up all of the areas 2,000 foot peaks. With renewed vigor and attention, the course will be well-marked and exciting with epic climbs, descents, and single track with the obligatory mud.

PROLOGUE TIME TRIALS
The Friday Time trials offer two choices: The classic 5 mile Individual mountain time trial course features a gut wrenching 800 foot climb in the last mile. Or a two person Team Time Trial featuring two major climbs for a total 3000 ft in 22 miles ending with the same climb up Gannett Hill.
